All you need is love
there’s nothing you can sing that can’t be sung… the band is taking a break… the best man and the maid of honor are running to the stage to sing their gift to the newlyweds… a perfect song for the occasion…he picks up the guitar and strums a few chords to find his tone… she adjusts the mike stand… leaning on either side of the microphone they sing the gospel from john and paul … nothing you can do that can’t be done… they are not the best performers nor are the guests the best listeners… but the song is not for the guests… the newlyweds are leaving their table to join their friends on the stage to complete the quartet… they sing… to each other… to themselves… to the world… nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time… a defining moment for the singers… for the newlyweds… for the song… nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game… play the role… play guitar and sing… nothing you can make that can’t be made… then why isn’t everyone singing… no one you can save that can’t be saved… with a song like this anything is possible… it permeates the room hovering over the noisy crowd to whom it’s nothing more than a background noise… an inescapable noise… they try to ignore it but it doesn’t go away… all you need is love… of course… that’s why we are all here... all you need is love… gathered to celebrate a lifelong commitment… all you need is love… toasts… gifts… smiles… nothing you can see that isn’t shown… but what else is there to see… nothing you can know that isn’t known… well that’s just too heavy for this tipsy crowd… all you need is love…the guests are finally noticing the song and starting to join the refrain… all you need is love… a few camera flashes here and there… all you need is love… may all your wishes come true… all you need is love… may you have everything you may want… all you need is love… | | Friday, January 4th, 2008 | | 4:01 pm |
Can't have it both ways...
I've recently heard an opinion that communism and atheism are one and the same. This usually comes from the extreme evangelical right, who seem to think that capitalism is particularly Christian. Without pushing my own agenda here, I want to point out that one of the foundations of communism is sharing material benefits - especially with those who can't provide for themselves. Спасибо, Хорватия!
Мы всегда жаловались на невезение в международных футбольных соревнованиях. Казалось бы это уже какой-то комплекс неполноценности. Все и всё были против нас. И каждый раз когда кто-то пытался проанализировать ситуация трезво, раздавались голоса, что мол всё это до фени, что всё это какой-то заговор против росстийского футбола. Вот и в этом году нам опять не повезло, не смогли обыграть сборную какого-то там Израиля, которому и смысла сопротивляться, казалось бы, не было. После этого поражения, нам уже ничего не светило. Наши шансы на попадание на Евро 2008 стали почти что ничтожными. Нам светило попасть на чемпионат Европы 2008, только лишь в том случае если мы выиграем последний матч у Андорры (что в общем не так уж невероятно), и если Хорватия обыграет англичан (что, по предсказанию многих, считалось фантастикой). Хорваты уже обеспечили себе путёвку на Евро 2008, и им совсем не обязательно было выигрывать. Они могли бы и проиграть, и всё равно выйти на чемпоинат Европы. Но либо они очень хотели помочь нам, братьям славянам, либо хорватский тренер, давно мечтающий работать в английской премьер-лиге, очень хотел произвести впечатление играя на стадионе Уэмбли, в Лондоне, - как бы там ни было, а хорваты, в упорнейшей борьбе, выиграли у сборной Англии со счётом 3-2, и не только позволили нам выйти на Евро 2008, но и лишили англичан этой чести. Казалось бы для англичан это игра имела гораздо большее значение, чем для сборной Хорватии, но нам на этот раз "повезло." Повезло, но как мы этим шансом воспользовались? Андорра, казалось бы, не такая уж и футбольная держава, а российская сборная заствила нас волноваться буквально до последней минуты игры. Единственный гол Сычёва, хотя и обнадёживал, ничего не гаранитровал. Не смог реализовать пенальти Колодин. За грубую игру был удалён с поля Аршавин, а сборная Андорры, которой уже ничего не светило, продолжала сопротивляться. В итоге, удача улыбнулась нам. Но удача ли это? Скорее нет. Выиграли по Блатту
В воскресение 16 сентября баскетбольная сборная России впервые со времени распада СССР выиграла чемпионат Европы! Российская сборная не только не считалась фаворитом в этом турнире, она должна была пройти дополнительный квалификационный этап чтоб попасть в Испанию, где проходил чемпионат Европы. Начиная с 1/4 финала против Франции и кончая абсолютно невероятным финалом против Испании - эта сборная совершила чудо. Если кто-то ещё мог предположить что нашим по плечу обыграть французов, то против Литвы нам и на площадку не стоило выходить. Литве, которая трижды выигрывала чемпионат Европы (и это не будучи в составе СССР) и которая в Сиднее в 2000-ом году заставила крупно понервничать самих американцев из НБА проиграв им всего на три очка - такой команде, казалось бы не стоило большого труда расправиться со сборной России, пока ещё никак себя не зарекомендовавшей. Испания же, выигравшая чемпионат мира в прошлом году, не сомневалась что золото европейского чемпионата достанется именно ей. В победу России до сих пор трудно поверить. Недостаток таланта, вечные проблемы с тренером, постоянные взаимные обвинения в чём-то, нежелание просто взяться за дело и разбиться но сделать его как следует. Впервые в истории старшим тренером был избран иностранец, Дэвид Блатт из США. Россиский спортивный мир известен своей неприязнью к тренерам-иностранцам, а тут вот выбрали. Надо отмемить что Блатт зарекомендовал себя как профессионал настраивающийся на отличный результат, и как правило доводящий свою команду до него. К примеру питерское Динамо, о котором никто и не слышал под его руководством выиграл кубок Европы. Решили всё-таки попробовать иностранца в роли старшего тренера... Кстати ещё об иностранцах - решающие два очка в финале нашей команде принёс Джон Роберт Холден, урождённый американец, получивший российское граждаство. Всем членам этой команды присуждено звание заслуженного мастера спорта, а тренерам - заслуженного тренера России. С Блаттом уникальный случай - он первый иностранец в истории российсного спорта (и уж точно советского) которому присуждено это звание. Радостно то что и Россия наконец начала доверять и ценить вклад иностранцев. Можем ведь если захотим, жаль только что для этого понадобилось приглашать тренера за-за границы, которому безусловно надо отдать должное - он сделал с этой командой, на которую все махнули рукой, что-то невообразимой, что к счастью для нас, болельщиков стало реальностью. Хочется надеяться что после этого события, российский спортивный бомонд (не только баскетбольный, футбольный например тоже) перестанет искать отмазки, и возьмйтся за дело. | | Sunday, June 24th, 2007 | | 3:13 pm |

Freedom of religion
It is well known in the US that the first colonists came to the New World to escape the religious persecution. That desire was reflected in the US Constitution, Amendment I, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” This is, in my opinion, an excellent phrasing of the concept: not “guarantee the freedom of religion”, not “create no regulation as to establishing of religion,” – “make no laws…”, in other words, government has nothing to do with religion, and vice versa. It seems that the extreme evangelical right in this country takes it for granted that the predominance of Christian practices in the US over other faiths is sufficient argument for favoring that religion. They make no secret about it. They say that the founding fathers were Christians; therefore, this country must follow the same faith. They want this issue to be discussed at the government level, when it doesn’t belong there. Other arguments include: we write “In God We Trust” on our money, and the pledge of allegiance includes the words “…one country, under god…” The latter argument doesn’t hold water because those words were added to the pledge of allegiance in the 1950-s – they were not in the original text, and the former argument is pure sacrilege – to mention god’s name on money, the filthy lucre! Various Christian denominations in the US compete for attention of people who live here. It is no different from commercials on TV. Church that needs to entice parishioners to join through advertising stops being an institution of faith and becomes a business. An exception to this trend is Catholics, who are not resorting to such tricks. Faith is a deeply personal experience. It is very subjective. True faith, it seems, requires considerable efforts to find and maintain that special connection with the deity. Once found, it doesn’t need social acceptance. If one is accepted by god, he or she shouldn’t need acceptance of others. The saving-the-sinners-from-hell argument is pretty weak too – if this particular faith were the only salvation, everyone should come to it sooner or later; or, if god is forgiving, the sinners still have the opportunity to benefit from god’s benevolence. Because of the extremely personal and subjective nature of religion, it is most convincing when an individual practices it without any kind of organized social structure. If there happens to be a community who voluntarily practice the same religion, their congregation would look believable and sincere. Anything beyond that – advertising on TV, bullying the infidels, paying the preacher a salary to work at a church – is only for the sake of appearances. In this respect, people who search their god through trial and error seem infinitely more honest and sincere than those who go to church every Sunday and leave a certain dollar amount as a contribution to the spiritual. | | Thursday, February 1st, 2007 | | 9:07 pm |

The nature of religion is such that people are made to serve something supernatural through a specific frame of mind, practices, passing on of the doctrine to the younger generations. What sets Christianity apart, at least its protestant wing, is its amazing flexibility and adaptability to the reality of changing times. Some would say that’s one of the reasons for Christianity’s success, but there is a pitfall somewhere there. The great appeal of any religious practice is its constant nature. If a specific school of religious thought has been tested for longer period of time, we are more likely to believe it. We want to cling to the rock of this or that faith. Logic and philosophy
I used to take classes in logic and philosophy taught by the same professor. Long after that, I started wondering why: what is there in common between the two? Seemingly, they are almost opposites: one explains the reality in a rational way; the other washes it away saying that there are no absolute laws governing this reality. So how are these sciences related, if at all? If the human knowledge works from the particular to the general, where would these and other sciences stand? Probably, more exact sciences, like physics, biology, and chemistry, would come first, since they are more empirical. We learn best from our own experiences. From there, we notice similarities, see patterns, draw conclusions, and discover more general laws of nature. So, what is the place of philosophy and logic in this spectrum? They both are so abstract they should be at the most general extreme. One difference between the two is how our mind uses them. After acquiring a certain amount of knowledge our brain puts it in the library organized by logic (it would reject anything contrary to it), and from then on logic would extract the necessary piece of information and explain it for us, whereas philosophy, which knows no absolute rules, is a probe that our brain puts out into the unknown and attempts to explain the unexplained. | | Saturday, January 20th, 2007 | | 1:28 am |

В том что мы преподаём историю от прошлого к настоящему есть определённая проблема. Говоря в настоящем и начиная лекцию с какого-то момента в прошлом мы как бы разрываем нить времени и отсылаем нашу аудиторию в место и время, о котором они ничего не знают. It's all in your head...
In The Varieties of Religious Experiences, William James has a chapter on Religion of Healthy-Mindedness, where he examines how the value of different types of cures takes on a religious aspect, often originating from a purely religious source. The chapter abounds in examples of how people, after having a moment of religious revelation, cured themselves of diseases, bodily and spiritual. The main theme among these, he contends, is to surrender to a higher being, higher mind, etc., and not rely on one’s own strengths, - not to fight, but let it all go. The higher being will take care of everything: it will give one strength, support, shelter, etc., - one only needs to trust it entirely. Even if one of such schools of thought didn’t originate from religion, the mere suggestion that there is an omnipotent higher being that is benevolent and willing to help makes it a religion. If we were to take this aspect away and leave just the “yield yourself to the world” part, it will make a good self-improvement technique for people in distress, but it will be rational. Would it be more effective? - Probably not, because it’s much more difficult for the human mind to envision itself as a self-contained unit, powerful enough to cure its problems. It’s much easier, however, to think of oneself as an extension of a bigger and more powerful entity that would help you in your weak moments. That, in essence, is the definition of religion. It requires absolute and blind faith in exchange for the peace of mind. The philosophy of aikido is somewhat similar in that it teaches one not to fight force with force. It teaches that the world was created in harmony and any aggression (disturbance of the harmony) is doomed because nature strives for harmony, and sooner or later the aggression will perish by its own sword. For an individual, this idea is a way of dealing with problems (not only as it relates to martial arts), quite like the religion of healthy-mindedness. The difference is that aikido doesn’t require blind faith in a supernatural being; instead, it offers ways of tapping into ki – the source of energy that can only be used for restoring harmony, but it’s up to the individual to use it. У природы нет плохой погоды
В Центральном Техасе почти не бывает снега. Но природа тут предлагает определённый компромис: раз в год, от силы два раза, тут выпадает дождь при минусовой температуре, и всё покрывается корочкой льда. По местным понятиям это ЧП: закрываются магазины, школы, предприятия. Люди сидят по домам и наслаждаются внеочередным выходным. И только дети, наслышенные о снеговиках, катках и санках, и всё ещё надеящиеся на то что пойдёт снег, бродят по улицам, где когда-то ездили машины. Человеку привыкшему к снежной зиме это поначалу кажется смехотворным и надуманным, но прожив тут шесть лет, в течение которых снег отдаляется всё дальше и дальше, я начинаю мыслить так словно и для меня снег в диковинку. Вот уже второй день подряд всё покрыто льдом. С крыш и навесов висят чуть ли не полуметровые сосульки, с которых правда уже потекло. Температура около нуля. На улицу выходить неохота, и я созерцаю это ледяное царство из окна... вот уже второй день, и мне всё равно трудно поверить своим глазам. Это как будто плод воображения начинающего сюрреалиста, который исчезнет как только я открою дверь чтобы выпустить собак во двор... а сфотографировать это чудо это всё равно что осквернить его - воспоминания о чем-то малодоступном, что случившись однажды вряд ли повторится, - вещь несравненно более уникальная чем картинка в фотоальбоме... | | Sunday, January 7th, 2007 | | 11:45 am |
